Comforting Cab ride in the Unsafe Delhi
In a city like Delhi, which is constantly feeling the threat to women safety, I had a pleasant surprise today.
I took a cab from Noida to go into the city and had such a wonderful journey. I took a cab through one of the cab phone apps ( I have had my share of disappointments with booking cabs), and it was difficult to explain the location to the driver in the first go.
For some reason, their limited understanding of English does not let them develop good listening skills. I realised listening to English spoken over the phone is very different from what you speak face-to-face.
So my first driver could not decipher an 'F' tower with an 'S' tower. Once I sat in the cab, he did mention his embarrassment. That is when I realised, the cab drivers were making a conscious effort of being liked and making an impression on their ride. It was nothing put on and definitely, there was no staring through the rear view mirror. He concentrated on his journey and was aware of my basic needs for the air-conditioner to be turned up.
There was a slight fauxpa with the destination. I was in for another surprise- the driver could repeat every English word I spoke. I reached by destination and couldn't help asking him, " Why are you driving a cab? You understand and read English well. Why don't you get a job?" He merely smiled and thanked me for my ride.
The journey back was as pleasant with the driver asking me to rate him well. I couldn't help but give both an ace rating.
I don't know if I was plain and simple lucky or acting in the right manner. But I didn't have any problem travelling in the 'unsafe Delhi'.
I loved the #Uber service and would advise women to opt for their cabs. #Ola still has a long way to go in training their staff (whether customer care or not) and teach basic etiquette to the drivers that drive under their banner.
Unless the basic quality of conduct does not change, any kind of innovation in India is a complete eye wash.
